Railroad Tracks - Mug Rug #18

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Mug Rug Monday on Friday.

As promised, here is this week’s mug rug. This mug rug is based on my Railroad Tracks pattern.

I originally designed the quilt for the Toscana fabric line from Northcott a couple of years ago. It uses 35 colours in varying values from light to dark. Plus a few shades of black and grey as the background.

The mug rug is one block of the quilt and this time I used a totally different colour palette. I had a basket of 2 ½″ strips sitting on the ironing board and used three of them to create the mug rug.

One for the background and one for the railroad track.

The 2 ½″ strips

I had a bit of wastage since most of the strips had to be cut to 1 ½″ wide.

The railroad track was done as a strip set.

Two strips of fabric made of blue and yellow

Then sewn to the centre piece.

And the side pieces added.

Then quilted with a variegated thread that matches the background fabric. Straight lines worked well with this design. And I have a few threads to pull through.

A choice had to be made for the binding – teal or blue?

I chose the blue strip and here is the finished mug rug at 8″ x 9″.
