free motion acorn motif

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Free Motion Friday.

I started out making ghosts for Halloween and ended up with funky acorns instead or at least that is what they look like to me. For some they may look like ghosts especially if you were to add in some eyes.

These acorns are really very simple to make and can be made as a single unit, in a row for a border or as an all over design.

Step #1

Start at the top and stitch down the first side. The first bit of stitching would be the connecting stitches to another motif.

Start at the top and stitch the first side down to the bottom

Step #2

Continue around the bottom making a scalloped design – I used 3.

Stitch the scalloped bottom

Step #3

Stitch up to the top creating the other side.

Stitch back up to the top

Step #4

Add in some extra stitching in the middle if you wish to echo the outside edges.

Extra lines added in for dimension

Here they are in an all over design and a little bit smaller.

They also look great in a row – perfect for a border motif. You could leave them all open, have some with lines in the middle or all with lines in the middle.

Option 1

In a row with no extra stitching

Option 2

Extra stitching on some and not others

In a row – some with and some without extra stitching

Option 3

Extra stitching on all acorns

In a row with extra stitching on all

My favourite is option #2. Which is yours?

A perfect fall motif or any time of the year.

Happy Quilting!
