Free motion stockings stitched on fabric

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Free Motion Friday.

I guess this will be my last Christmas motif now until next year. Next week I will have to think of something to ring in the New Year with. And I already have an idea. It is always good to have an ideas. So if any of you have ideas of what you would like to see as a free motion motif just leave a comment below and let me know.

Stockings – I think I probably dream about stockings with all of the ones I have created lately.  Free motion stockings – are these not the cutest? I don’t think mine are hung in a row very well but rather a chaotic mess like at the back door when everyone just kicks off their boots and walks on in.

This is one motif I do recommend practice drawing with pencil and paper prior to stitching. Getting that heel and toe just right is what it is all about but then again if they are not quite right that’s okay too.

I tried out the Supreme Slider I highlighted on Cool Tool Thursday this week and oh boy does it work well. The fabric just slid so nicely under the free motion foot. I have to get myself the larger one to go with my larger machine. Yep, I like it.

A great tip someone gave me when using the Supreme Slider was to make sure to put those feed dogs down – I don’t think it would work very well with them up.

Here are the step by step instructions for stitching those adorable little stockings.

Step 1

Start out with the free motion meandering part and then sew a straight line for the side of the stocking.

Step 2

Create a curve and almost half circle for the heel of the stocking.

Step 3

Move onto putting an arch in the foot and a rounded toe up around the top of the foot.

Step 4

Sew another straight line up for the other side of the stocking.

Step 5

Stitch over and meet the other side of the stocking and carry on with some more meandering.

These little stockings could be made in any size, hung across the mantle or large enough to fill in an open space. If any of you still are working on Christmas projects give this motif a try.

Happy Quilting!
