Small art quilts

Hey everyone, welcome back to Stitch Along Sunday.

My July piece didn’t get made – for some reason July was here and then gone and no Stitch Along Sunday piece made but I am back and here is the start of my August piece.

Ruth Blanchet of Arbee Designs has posted the rules for Stitch Along Sunday and each week, usually on Friday, she will post the next set of instructions. Each month is one project. Here are the August Week 1 instructions. These little projects are lots of fun, not complicated and are a way to do something different and make a little art quilt in the process.

Ruth has posted her creation for August Week 1 as well as made an August Gallery for others to have their projects posted on.

So the instructions for this week were to pick a fabric that you would consider ugly or will have difficulty using, one that went with it and one that contrasted with it.  My ugly fabric isn’t really that ugly but I only have a fat quarter of it so not sure what I would use it for. Here they are.

Next step was to cut the fabric into geometric pieces and either piece, fuse or appliqué the pieces together. I chose a combination of piecing and appliqué.

I sewed some strips together and then cut it into 3 triangles.

Then I sewed some more strips together, made some squares and rectangles.

With not a lot of fuss or positioning I put the pieces together.

A slight turn of the bottom piece. Looks like a slanted ladder now.

Then I added in a large rectangle of the ugly fabric to the top section and put the top and bottom together.

I felt it was too plain so added some appliquéd circles on a strip of teal.

This piece kind of reminds me of those very rough, slapped together, make shift tree houses that all boys like to make when they are young. Especially with it’s uneven sides and edges.

Now it is all ready for next week – wonder what we will do next?

I hope you will join Ruth and I for Stitch Along Sunday. If you do then just send along a photo of your piece and we will post it on the blog or grab the Stitch Along Sunday button off my home page to put on your own blog.

Lots of fun and this little exercise gets those creative juices flowing and some thinking outside the box.

Are you participating in Stitch Along Sunday? I’d love to know! Feel free to grab the button up top and put it on your blog. If you email me with a photo of your creation and a couple lines about it, I’ll highlight it here on my blog each week.

Happy Quilting!
