Free motion quilting in circles

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Free Motion Friday.

My youngest, Tripod who has only 3 legs, ends up spinning around in circles a lot when she tries to do something such as change direction or get situated just right in front of the food dish. Quite comical to watch – let’s hope she doesn’t get dizzy.

Today’s post then, is all about circles – free motion circles spinning around and around.

This type of quilting is a great filler for large open spaces or large blocks in a quilt – it can add texture, dimension and depth especially depending on the type of thread used.

To create this design start in the centre and just keep spinning around and around and around until the space you want to fill is filled or you are too dizzy to keep going just like when you were a kid and couldn’t stand up after spinning around and around with your arms open wide. We always thought going the opposite direction would unwind us – ah, little did we know.

Very little movement of the fabric is required to create the circles. Just keep the fabric oriented in one direction and simply move the entire piece in a circular motion rather than trying to spin the fabric around and around..

I have added 2 smaller sets of spinning circles  on either side of the large one just to give the eye a visual line to follow – the negative space on the other corners works well to balance the whole design. The stitch lines are not perfect, not even and that is what creates dimension within the design itself.  Imagine if I had used a 12 wt metallic thread.

The design reminds me of an object being dropped in water and the ripples fanning out from the centre.

Happy Quilting!
