Hey Everyone, welcome back to Mug Rug Monday.
Last week was quite a week. I was on the road 5 out of 7 days which meant little time for writing blog posts. This week I am only away one evening so should be able to get out a few more posts.
Today’s mug rug I am creating with my Rectangles and Squares block just in a much smaller size than the original pattern.
The original block is 12 inches square and these ones in this mug rug are 4 inches square – just a wee bit smaller. The final size of the mug rug is 8 inches square.
I pulled out my scrap bin from under the sewing table and dumped it on the table to look for 8 coordinating fabrics to make this mug rug.
I came up with a whole bunch of teal fabrics which I had used in my Monet’s Garden test piece. The fabrics need to have a variety of light, medium and dark value in order to create a design with the blocks.
To begin I resized the block in EQ7 so I wouldn’t have to do the math in my head as to what size the pieces needed to be cut – at 0700 this morning I wasn’t in the mood to do math.
Then I cut all the pieces and sewed them together to create 4 – 4 inch blocks. The great thing about this block is there is only one seam to match in the whole block. Bonus!
After playing around with the blocks I chose this layout. There are several possibilities for layouts with this block. Even an on-point version which can be found in my Beginner’s Patchwork class at the Academy of Quilting.
But I wish I had used this layout as the 4 little squares make a bigger impact in this layout than the one above.
After sandwiching the three layers I chose a variegated teal thread and did some free motion stippling. This is one of my favourite quilting motifs.
I lucked out and already had a piece of binding cut and folded in the scrap bin which made it easy to create the binding for this piece.
Oh and speaking of binding remember last week I couldn’t find the green fabric I wanted for the binding on my Scattered Eggs mug rug – well I found it when I opened my workshop box for the Twisted Log Cabin class I taught in London at the end of last week. I knew I had seen it somewhere. Now to get rid of the pink binding and put the green one on.
If you liked this then why not check out my Rectangles & Squares pattern.
Happy Quilting!
