A Perfect Gift For A Fall Wedding

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Story Time Monday.

I made this quilt several years ago as a wedding present for Michael’s sister Sarah and her husband Jason. They had a fall wedding at the cottage and so what better than a quilt in fall colours.

I actually started the quilt in a class when I was living in Yellowknife – unfortunately, I do not recall the name of the pattern designer. I started with a feature fabric of fall leaves and pulled all the other fabrics for the quilt from it.

Originally I had started with this fabric and a totally different pattern.

I think the pattern I was going to do was all bear paws but then when I saw the maple leaf quilt class I thought much better. Especially since they live in an area called Sugarbush which is full of sugarbush maples. It couldn’t have been more appropriate.

You may note as well that the feature fabric does not feature anywhere in the quilt – not sure why but I didn’t use it for some reason. It is sitting waiting to be used as a border on the quilt with the remaining maple leaf blocks – yes, kind of got carried away with how much fabric I bought and how many blocks I made.

The block is a log cabin maple leaf which I think is quite stunning. The bright fall colours are shown off very well on the light green background.

I added borders of maple leaves, flying geese and strips – yes I had a lot of fabric.

By the time I had this quilt together I was a bit tired of it. At the time these colours were not ones that I enjoyed working with. Since the quilt was king size I decided the best thing to do would be to have it quilted by a long armer.

Once the quilt came back from being quilted I quite liked it – amazing how the quilting can change the look of a quilt and your view of a quilt.

The back didn’t end up quite as I had wanted – the squares were to be centred on the back but it didn’t get loaded onto the long arm machine to do that and I had made the backing way to large so the squares are a bit off set. That’s okay.

The quilt was a huge success as a gift. And to add, it is a quilt that is used on a daily basis which makes me very happy.

Happy Quilting!
