red/green/gold placemat

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Stash Blasting Wednesday.

A couple of weeks ago I talked about some placemats that I made for my guild’s Outreach program. I made 6 in total but saved the 5th design for another post which happens to be today.

This design is very easy. Only 3 fabrics required, more if you want it to be scrappy looking. The placemat measures 12″ x 15″ finished.

The middle fabric is the feature fabric – in this case a fabric I had from a few years ago which happens to be one of my favourite Christmas fabrics. I used it in my Seasons Greetings quilt.

The other two fabrics I matched to the coloured balls in the feature fabric.

Cutting Instructions

Note: amounts are for two placemats

Feature fabric – cut TWO (2) 4 ½″ x 15 ½″ rectangle

Red fabric – cut ONE (1) 4 ½″ x WOF strip; sub cut into TEN (10) 3 ½″ x 4 ½″ rectangles

Gold fabric – cut ONE (1) 4 ½″ x WOF strip; sub cut into TEN (10) 3 ½″ x 4 ½″ rectangles

Creating the Placemat

1. Sew a red and gold rectangle together. Press the seam in either direction. Make 8 pairs.

2. Sew the pairs together from step 1. Make 4 sets of 2 pairs alternating red and gold.

3. Sew the remaining two red rectangles to a gold rectangle in two of the sets from step 2. Each set will be made up of 5 rectangles: 3 red and 2 gold

4. Sew the remaining gold rectangles to a red rectangle in the remaining two sets from step 2. Each set will be made up of 5 rectangles: 3 gold and 2 red. The opposite of step 3.

5. Sew the units made in step 3 to both sides of a feature fabric rectangle. Press the seams towards the feature fabric.

6. Sew the units made in step 4 to both sides of the remaining feature fabric rectangle. Press the seams towards the feature fabric.

7. Sandwich and quilt as desired. Finish the quilt with your favourite method or use the no binding method #1 or no binding method #2. I used method #1.

A Table Runner

This design would also make a quick and easy table runner.

Cut the feature fabric 4 ½″ x 30 ½″ to avoid a seam line.

Sew all of the rectangles together making sure to alternate the colours.

Add the strips of rectangles to the feature fabric.

Quilt as desired. Finish as desired.

Extra pieces can easily be added to this design for a longer table runner.

A quick and easy project to have done in time for the holidays and use up some of that Christmas fabric from your stash.

Why stop there? This design would look great with any seasonal fabric and use up more of the stash.

Happy Quilting!
