cream fabric pointing towards the centre of block

Light valued triangle pointed towards the centre of the block

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Stash Blasting Wednesday.

I designed this quilt for the Northcott fabric line Penelope by Sue Beevers last spring. There are two different colour ways for this fabric line – cranberry and blueberry. My pattern Criss Crossed uses the cranberry colour way. The fabric line will be arriving in shops November 2013. It always seems so strange to design something long before the fabric is out but that is so there is time to write the pattern.

This quilt is made with just one block but has two different layouts using the block. By swapping the placement of the fabrics on either side of the stripe fabric the layout is different. Both layouts create secondary designs with illusions of fabrics receding and advancing within the design.

I love when different designs are formed by just one simple little swap of fabric positions.

Layout #1

In this layout the light coloured triangle points towards the centre of the block creating an illusion of diamonds behind bars in this design.

Layout #2

In this layout the dark coloured triangle points towards the centre of the block creating an illusion of circles in the quilt with a fence of squares behind the circles.

The pattern itself has 5 different sizes. All the cutting instructions, measurements and fabric requirements can be found in the pattern.

The Blocks

One block has the light valued triangles on the inside of the block with the dark valued triangles on the outside.

The other block is the opposite with the dark coloured triangles on the inside of the block and the light coloured triangles on the outside.

A Different Colour

I decided to use some fabrics from my stash to create Criss Crossed as I wanted to see what it would look like in another set of fabrics and colours. I started with the sashing fabric and picked my fabrics around it for the quilt. Blues and greens – a great combination. The key to this design is value – light, dark and medium to create contrast within the design so the secondary designs form.

Layout option #2 in blue and green

The blue and green version

I have enough fabric to make the other layout except for the border fabric. I will have to dig into my stash and find another blue to use. That’s okay it means my stash is going down or at least until the Penelope line lands on my doorstep.

I will have the blue and green version at my booth (#500) at CreativFestival this weekend October 25-27 at the Metro Toronto Centre so drop by to take a look and say hi.

Now to get the other one made – maybe at Country Concession’s Retreat the first weekend in November.

Happy Quilting!
