Bargello in Winter is the last in the Bargello Seasons series by Ruth Blanchet of Arbee Designs. I think that this one is my favourite as I really love the fabrics that I used and the colours. I started with the poppy fabric and built on the colour run from it. Because the quilt is called winter I also wanted to use fabrics that portrayed a feeling of winter and snow. The colours in the poppy fabric give a feeling of coolness which of course made a great place to start.

This pattern is written as a quilt as you go which makes it a very quick project. I did not do mine quilt as you go and started with the centre as any other bargello would be created.

I wanted to put on a fancy border and figured it would be a bit tricky trying to add a fancy border with quilt as you go. After taking Martha Schellingerhoud’s quilting in sections class last year at Country Concessions I could now do it very easily. The trick was to find a border that fit with the piece and created the look I wanted.

Once again I used The Border Workbook by Janet Klime to find a border to use on this quilt. I wanted a colour wash design that accentuated the bargello design. There was a perfect border in the book done on point which also meant mitred corners again. I framed the inner bargello with a dark border and then added another border of the poppy fabric. The colour wash border was created with the four darker fabrics in the colour run. This provided a very nice frame for the rest of the quilt which I think gives the illusion of several frames.

Quilting the quilt was all done in free motion. I started in the middle and just went around and around with a wave design that looked like snow swirling up from the wind. The quilting was done with King Tut which is a variegated cotton by Superior Threads.
