Hey Everyone, welcome back to Colourful Friday.
It has been awhile since my last post about the memory quilt I was making. In fact almost a whole month.
I was so happy that the clothing I was working with for this memory quilt had a variety of colours. This made it much easier to design the quilt.
In the last post I had created only the card trick blocks and was about to put them together.
To create the centre of the quilt I used blue jeans and silk ties between the card trick blocks. Quite the combo but he was a biker and a business man so what better way to tie together his love of cards than with two other passions in his life.

The Borders
I struggled a bit with the borders. Initially I put in an inner border of blue and then wasn’t quite sure what to do. I had many of his favourite shirts to work with and there were several colours. I made a border of rectangles but wasn’t thrilled with how it was turning out. Even framing it with another border of blue on the other side and laying out the black for the outer border didn’t help any.
Middle Border
Then I decided that I would use several different sizes of these shirts with each colour being a different size. I arranged them so that the opposite corners of the quilt were mirror image. This worked out much better and I was very pleased with the results.
Outer Border
Finally I added a black border using more shirts. Plenty of black to go all the way around.
With the quilt top finished it was time to take it to the long arm. I prefer to get these clothing quilts quilted on a long arm – much easier with all the different fabrics than trying to do it on my domestic machine.
Happy Quilting!
Hello Jen, I am currently making a memory quilt for a friend’s daughter. I love what you did to border your quilt. It ties it all together and focuses the quilt on the different fabrics. May I use your ideas with the shirts I have in my memory quilt?
Lynn, for sure you can use my idea. Happy Quilting Jen
