Hey Everyone, welcome back to Free Motion Friday.
I seem to be running dry on ideas for free motion this week and so I figured why not get a little inspiration from someone who spent a whole year creating a new free motion design each day. Yes 365 of them and they are all in a book for us to take a look at. Who is this person? Her name is Leah Day. The book these can be found in is 365 Free Motion Quilting Designs. She has also written two other books which I took my inspiration from.
I took a browse through a couple of the books and found some very interesting designs. I decided to pick one from each book and give it a try.
The photo at the top of the page is Lollipops which is found in Leah’s book From Daisy to Paisley. This book has 50 beginner free motion quilting designs with directions for each and nice large diagrams of the motifs.
I am very excited to find the lollipop motif as I just made a quilt with fabric that has lollipops on it and this design will be perfect to quilt it with.
The photo below shows Circuit Board.
This motif is found in Leah’s book From Feathers to Flames. This book has 60 intermediate free motion quilting designs. The directions and large diagrams are included in this book as well.
So if you are looking for some inspiration for free motion as I was, check out Leah’s books or website as there is a lot of inspiration to be found.
Leah also has a fantastic blog called The Free Motion Quilting Project. You should definitely stop by and check out her work, simply stunning free motion quilting!
And as Leah says anyone can free motion it just takes lots of patience, practice and a few tools.
Happy Quilting!

Hi Jen. Another great site for fmq tutorials is Lori Kennedy’s “The Inbox Jaunt”. I follow Leah and Lori regularly, and yours.
Thanks Dianne! I’ll check out her site this weekend.
