Hey Everyone, welcome back to Cool Tool Thursday.
The other day I was at the dollar store looking for something in particular and ended up in the craft aisle. Now most of the things in this aisle have no relation to quilting what so ever but then I saw these shapes and thought oh they would work as templates for quilting.
I of course picked up a few different ones as they were only $1.50 a package so why stop at only one.
They are simple shapes – stars, squares, hearts, circles, clouds, flowers and leaves. The great thing is there are several sizes of each shape in the package.
Now they are very sticky on one side as they are meant to stick to walls but I am sure the sticky side could be covered with a piece of wax paper or freezer paper and cut to fit if you wanted to get rid of the sticky. If not just turn the non sticky side to the fabric and trace onto your quilt whereever you would like the motif to be with your favourite marking tool.
Not sure they would work with a rotary cutter as they are made of foam and one slip of the rotary cutter would not leave an intact template.
I haven’t used them yet but do have a couple of baby quilts I am going to try them out on. I am excited to give them a try.
Happy Quilting!
Great idea! I like using new and unusual items to make quilting templates. I’ll have to look for these.
Tammy they are great and so many different sizes with each shape. Also very economical.
I just shared at club yesterday some great templates – cookie cutters! They are just the right size to make them the feature of a loop-d-loop fill. (Otherwise known as cursive L loops instead of just stippling) They are stiff so you can easily trace around. They can also be applique shapes. And they aren’t the usual shapes you find in the template section of your quilt store. AND, if they’re out in the quilt studio, I’m not baking cookies with them while trying to get into better shape:0)!
I purchased plastic place mats at the 99 cent store and cut out templates. I am going to get these Foam shapes and place them on the plastic place mats and cut out the shapes.
Hope this is helpful for you in using these foam shapes.
Ana, that would work to back the sticky side of the foam shapes. Thanks for sharing this tip.
I too have used cookie cutters as quilting motifs and they come in an unending variation of shapes & sizes.Plus you get 2 uses for the price of 1!
Dawn, cookie cutters are fabulous and yes you do get 2 uses for the price of 1.
