Hey Everyone, welcome back to Mug Rug Monday on Saturday.
I am just getting my mug rug done for this week in the nick of time. I really do need to get myself back on track with these mug rugs. I guess done at the end of the week is better than not done at all.
My travelling has now slowed down and I am home again so I should be able to get myself back on track in the next week.
As you know I liberated all of my scraps at the beginning of the week and found some pieces of Bargello that have inspired this week’s mug rug. These pieces were left over from my Diverse Light Art Quilt that I made a few years ago.
The background fabric was a piece I kept from the scraps as I figured it would work well as the night sky.
I cut up a few pieces of the Bargello – green and pink – and placed them on the background.
Changed them around and added a couple more pieces.
Then a few more and said that’s enough, the sky is full. One of my favourite memories of living in the Arctic is seeing the night sky full of northing lights that were dancing overhead and making swishing sounds as they flew through the sky. I sure do miss them.
I fused the pieces to the background and then spray glued the layers together to sandwich the quilt. I normally pin my quilts but I knew that they would just get in the way of my quilting.
Thread chosen – 4 colours of shiny rayon.
The initial stitching was a free motion zigzag around the end of each piece.
Then I did chaotic free motion zigzag to create the illusion of the lights dancing in the sky.
Bound in blue it is ready for a mug of coffee and plate of cookies. It is definitely large enough to hold these two items as it is 8 ¼″ x 12 ½″.
The back looks kind of cool too. If I had used a dark blue background it would have looked really cool. Oh well, next time.
Happy Quilting!
I never knew that Northern Lights have a sound! Your quilt has a great story:)
Kitty, they really do make a swooshing sound as they dance through the sky – so amazing they are.
