stitched fish on fabric

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Free Motion Friday.

What better way to ring in the school year than with a school of free motion fish. These little guys are lots of fun to create and can be used in a section of a quilt as I did in my Sea Serpent quilt or as an all over edge to edge design. I do suggest making them a bit large if the design is going to be an all over one otherwise it could take a while.

The photo below shows the sequence in which to stitch the fish from start to finish. Add in the stippling between so they are all connected. Start at one corner of the fin, continue up one side of the fin then turn slightly to create the body in an arc. Mirror that arc down the other side for the body back towards the fin. Create the other side of the fin and close it up where the stitching started.

These take a bit more practice as they can be a bit tricky. I suggest drawing them out on a piece of paper first with a pencil. Once that is mastered then move over to the sewing machine and draw with the needle and thread.

Great fun for a nautical themed kids quilt.

Tune in next week to see one of these little guys all coloured in.

Happy Quilting!
