1 or 2 Day Quilting Class – Canadian Icons – Inukshuk
With 2017 being Canada’s 150th birthday I thought it would be appropriate to create a series of quilts highlighting several of Canada’s Icons. I’ve started the series with 2 icons that are dear to my heart – the Inukshuk and the lone pine.
In this class you will learn how to build the textured fabric that creates the snow and Inukshuk. The textured fabric can be created with non-traditional fabrics such as upholstery fabric or with traditional fabrics including cotton and batiks.
Have fun learning free motion zigzag or use a decorative stitch on your sewing machine that you have been wanting to try out to hold this textured fabric together.
In the two day class learn how to create a pieced background with a faux Bargello technique using 5 fabrics gradated from light to dark. The gradation can be soft and subtle or a little more vibrant and stand out. The one day class uses a single fabric background – a midnight sky to showcase the Inukshuk and northern lights.
Add some couching and free motion quilting to the Inukshuk to finish off the night sky with the Aurora Borealis.
Finally finish it off with a pieced binding that blends with the sky and snow.
Techniques taught in this class:
– creating your own fabric with a variety of fabrics using a fusible stabilizer
– fusible applique
– couching
– free motion zigzag/satin stitch
– a pieced binding to finish off the masterpiece
– facing a quilt instead of binding
Note: this class can be a 1 or 2 day workshop – the 2 day workshop has a pieced background and the 1 day workshop has a single fabric background
Note: choose between the Inukshuk or Lone Pine design for this class
For the confident beginner to advanced quilter.
