Hey Everyone, welcome back to Stash Blasting Wednesday.
I’ve come to the end of that jelly roll and charm pack I started using 3 weeks ago. I must say that I am quite surprised how much you can make with the two sets put together.
I had twelve 2 ½″ strips in the rust and teal colours. I made up 4 strip sets of 3 strips each. I must say that these colours have a bit more contrast in them than the pink and green ones and I like them much more. To help prevent warping or wobbliness in the strip sets press from the centre of the strip out to each end and sew the strips together in opposite directions.
I cut the strip sets up into six 6 ¼″ blocks each.
I decided to make more rail fence blocks with these strip sets and was hoping that I would be able to put the pink and green rail fence blocks with these ones but oh it wasn’t a good scene. These blocks are 12″ square.
The Rail Fence Blocks
I still had four 2 ½″ strips and 14 charm squares sitting on my work table that I needed to use. With these I made up another 12 blocks which I configured into three 12″ blocks.
Strip & Square Four Patch Block
The blocks put together in a 3 x 3 configuration. In hind sight I should have mixed the 4 different rail fence block pieces together from each strip set to make each 12″ block. This would have given the quilt a brighter effect all over. I am not ripping them apart now.
I do believe I like this block configuration better than the one at the top of the page. Not quite as heavy on the left bottom corner as the top one. What do you think?
Now a border or not. If I do a border it means I require more fabric and something to match these ones. I’ll keep my eye out and see what I can find as I am thinking sashing around each block would look good as well. I better throw the bits I have left in my purse to match the next time I am at a quilt shop.
That’s it on the jelly roll and charm pack. I can’t say that they are my favourite to work with but they do have their place and there is minimal cutting when they are used which is a bonus. Another great thing is you can whip up something quick and easy in no time if you need a gift or a cuddle quilt for the guild.
Happy Quilting!
They’re both lovely. I slightly prefer the top layout with the gradient effect, but it’s a tough choice!
So the overall size is about 36×36?
I love the fabrics and the second layout best, I don’t know why but I think it looks more scrappy and mixed up, kind of happier!
Great colors and fabrics!!
When I read the title of your post I thought you were referring to the end of the precut concept! But you weren’t–just the end of this specific group of precuts.
I don’t buy precuts for several reasons. I prefer to wash fabric before I use it. I like to use many fabrics in a quilt, not just the prints in one particular line. I buy fabric because I like it, rarely with a project in mind, so months or years later when I do cut into it I don’t want to be limited to what can be cut from 2.5″ strips or 5″ or 10″ squares.
Oh no Nann, I am sure there would be a lot of people upset with the end of the jelly roll and charm pack. I don’t use them very often either but had these ones and thought I might as well see what I could do with them.
