Hey Everyone, welcome back to Stash Blasting Wednesday.
With autumn just around the corner I dug into my stash and looked for a leaf fabric. I honestly do not have that many so it didn’t take long to locate them all and decide which one I would feature in this block and quilt. I have had this one for quite sometime – seems to me that is the story about all my fabric.
It is one of my favourite leaf fabrics as I love the colours that are in it – rust/orange, purple and green with some yellow thrown in for good measure all on a cream background. Everything is very dainty in it and soft – a very peaceful fabric. I hope the quilt will be very peaceful and comfy as well.
I picked a block that would showcase the leaf fabric and came up with one that is a half square triangle where the leaf fabric will be one whole side of the half square triangle. The rest of the block is quite simple in that it is just squares and triangles. Just need to be careful working with these triangles as they are all cut on the bias and will stretch out of shape if I am not careful.
The block is called Ladder 4 in EQ but I think I will call the block Squares & Triangles instead. Then once it is all put together I will name the quilt.
Squares & Triangles Block
This is a 12 inch finished block. I have used 6 fabrics for this block – the leaf fabric for one side of the square, a rust/orange for around the 3 little golden yellow squares and purple for the corner.
Cutting Instructions for One Block
Leaf Fabric – cut ONE (1) 13″ square; sub cut on the diagonal once – only one triangle will be needed
Rust Fabric – cut THREE (3) 3 ⅞″ squares; sub cut on the diagonal once to yield 6 triangles
Yellow Fabric #1 – cut ONE (1) 3 ½″ square
Yellow Fabric #2 – cut ONE (1) 3 ½″ square
Yellow Fabric #3 – cut ONE (1) 3 ½″ square
Purple Fabric – cut ONE (1) 6 ⅞″ square; sub cut on the diagonal once – only one triangle will be needed
Building the Block
Follow the layout of the pieces as per the photo below.
1. Sew a rust triangle to one side of each yellow square. Press the seam towards the square.
2. Sew a rust triangle to the other side of the yellow fabric #1 square so that it looks like this. See photo. Press the seam towards the square.
3. Sew a rust triangle to the other side of the yellow fabric #2 square so that it looks like this. See photo. Press the seam towards the square.
4. Sew a rust triangle to the other side of the yellow fabric #3 square so that it looks like this. See photo. Press the seam towards the square.
5. Sew the unit from step 2 to the unit from step 3. Take care to match the seams. Press the seam in either direction.
6. Sew the unit from step 4 to the unit from step 5. Press the seam in either direction.
7. Sew the purple triangle to the unit from step 6 placing it along the shorter side. Press the seam towards the purple triangle.
8. Sew the leaf triangle to the unit made in step 7. Press the seam towards the leaf fabric. The block will measure 12 ½″.
Here are four of the blocks sitting together in a square. I did not sew them together yet as I am thinking about putting a green triangle where two of the purple triangles are and having two colours instead of one. I know what I am going to do to finish this piece so will keep you posted on how I am doing.
Happy Quilting!
