Road to Heaven Quilt Block

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Stash Blasting Wednesday.

Another great road block today – this one is the Road to Heaven. The last few blocks have had a diagonal line through the middle created with squares and/or HSTs and I thought I would continue on with this theme for a couple more blocks. This one is slightly different from the rest and creates a very interesting design as have all the others.

Again I am sticking with the 6 inch block. For this one three fabrics are needed.  The design works best if the fabrics are of a light, medium and dark value.  I have chose to do mine in blue – light, medium and dark.  Perfect for a little boys room.

Fabrics - light, medium and dark blue.

Cutting the Pieces

All measurements include a ¼″ seam allowance.

Dark Fabric:

  • Cut FOUR (4) – 2″ squares

  • Cut THREE (3) – 2 ¾″ squares

Light Fabric:

  • Cut THREE (3) – 2 ¾″ squares
  • Cut ONE (1) – 3 ⅞″ square; then cut on the diagonal once
Pieces all cut.

Building the Block

Modified Half Square Triangle Square

Make 6 – 2” half square triangles from the three light and medium coloured 2 ¾″ squares. See my post on how to make half square triangles for directions. Square off to 2”.

Lay out pieces as per photo below to ensure proper placement for this section. Take care when handling the triangles as they are cut on the bias and can stretch. Make two (2).

Press towards triangle.

Sew the other triangle onto the unit made above. Take care in making sure that you have not turned the piece when it goes under the machine as I did and had to rip everything out not once but twice.

Designs

Once again I made 4 of these little blocks and put them together to see what design they created.  Design 1 and 2 are just the reverse of each other but when put together in the quilt will create an interesting overall effect of criss crosses and squares. Design 3 is a diagonal which if there were enough blocks made could be made into a huge cross in the middle of the quilt or a herringbone design.

Another great block that will make a stunning quilt in any fabrics – just remember to use a light, medium and dark value to create contrast between the fabrics so the design stands out.

Happy Quilting!
