Hey Everyone, welcome back to Inspirational Sunday.
Having lived in Yellowknife for 10 years one thing that never ceased to amaze was the Aurora Borealis. I could stand outside in the middle of the lane way looking up and watching the light dance all across the sky for hours – usually didn’t stay for hours otherwise I would have frozen to the spot. The lights often times are better when it is really cold and I mean really cold. I am talking about temperatures below -30. There are exceptions to this as I have seen amazing displays well above zero in the middle of August.
I have seen green lights, purple lights, white lights, pink lights and the coveted red lights. Green and white are the most common and don’t get me wrong there are gorgeous as well. When the whole sky is lit up in front of you and bands of light are just racing across the sky it really is something to see. I think though the pink and purple are my favourite mixed with a bit of white and green the display is sensational.
While living in the arctic I was a flight nurse and to be surrounded by them in the airplane is quite surreal. Did you know that once you get so far north you can no longer see the lights?
The northern lights have been a source of wonder and amazement all my life. Growing up in southern Saskatchewan we would sometimes see them on the horizon far far away. Living here in southern Ontario I look upward every night when I take Soda out for her last ritual of the day hoping to catch a glimpse of them dancing across the sky.
I have not been lucky enough to see them here so I have to recreate them in quilts, where they dance across the sky regardless of day or night.
Diverse Light is a quilt that is based on the northern lights – here is a little teaser. Tune into tomorrow for Story Time Monday to see the full quilt and learn how it was created.
May you experience the amazement of the dancing lights at least once in your life.
Happy Quilting!
