Hey Everyone, welcome back to Stash Blasting Wednesday.
Last week I had this block and the fabrics all picked out to bring to you but it just didn’t happen. I guess better late than never so here it is.
This is the fifth block in the series and the fifth complementary colour scheme. Another simple log cabin block this one is done in the round using all the same colour family to go around the centre block of a different colour. It is important to use a light, medium and dark value to make the rounds. I went from light to dark but the values could easily be reversed. For the centre piece I used a medium value.
If you missed the first four blocks they can be found here: Basic Log Cabin, Courthouse Steps, Off-Centre Log Cabin and Quarter 4 Log Cabin.
I chose blue-green otherwise known as teal or turquoise and red-orange for this block. I made the Bargello, Colour Connections in this colour scheme a few years ago.
Once again this is a 12 inch finished block and uses 4 different fabrics per block – 3 teal and one orange or 3 orange and one teal.
Cutting Instructions
Amounts are for one block and all measurements include the ¼″ seam allowance.
Piece A – cut 1 – 3 ½″ square from the medium orange and medium teal fabrics
Piece B – cut 2 – 2″ x 3 ½″ rectangles from the light teal fabric and the light orange fabric
Piece C – cut 2 – 2″ x 6 ½″ rectangles from the light teal & orange fabric and the medium teal & orange fabric
Piece D – cut 2 – 2″ x 9 ½″ rectangles from the medium teal & orange fabric and the dark teal & orange fabric
Piece E – cut 2 – 2″ x 12 ½″ rectangles from the dark teal fabric and the dark orange fabric
Block Layout
Here are the pieces shown with their corresponding letter.
Making the Block
All seams are a ¼″ and all seams should be pressed towards the block just sewn on.
1. Sew piece B (light fabric) to the top and bottom of piece A.
2. Sew piece C (light fabric) to the sides of the unit from step 1.
3. Sew piece C (medium fabric) to the top and bottom of the unit from step 2.
4. Sew piece D (medium fabric) to the sides of the unit from step 3.
5. Sew piece D (dark fabric) to the top and bottom of the unit from step 4.
6. Sew piece E (dark fabric) to the sides of the unit from step 5 to complete the 12 ½″ block.
Here are the two different coloured blocks together.
Happy Quilting!
Love the log cabin variations. Just finished a Marti Michel log cabin quilt and it’s at the long-arm quilters right now. Hope to try an off centre log cabin quilt when I get caught up on a few things and in between surgery on my wrists. I like that you’ve provided the pics and instructions for the various log cabins.
Julie that’s terrific. I love the off centre ones and the variations there of. Jen
