Hey Everyone, welcome back to Mug Rug Monday.
I was kind of distracted by scraps today. Yes, you read right – I was distracted by scraps. I know I don’t even like scraps but today I did.
I had all my scraps from the back room in my studio today. They covered my whole work space and more.
Today I said good bye to them so that they can be delivered to new owners later this month.
I’ve had some of these scraps since November 2002 when I took my first quilting class and the rest I have collected with every project since. That’s 13 years of scraps.
I wonder how much yardage there would be if they were all tied end to end? Don’t worry I’m not going to find out. I suspect I could make an escape rope for the tallest building in the world with no difficulty what-so-ever.
How tall is the tallest building in the world? And where is it?
The tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It is rises 829.8 m or 2722 feet into the air. Wow, that’s a lot of scraps needed for the escape rope.
I also emptied two bins like this one in the picture below the other day and took them to my workshop for a couple of the ladies in the Mississauga Guild. I received and e-mail from them today telling me that they were like kids in a candy shop as they each went through their bag of scraps.
All in all I bagged up 6 black garbage bags of scraps from my back room and studio. Here are 4 of them.
And I emptied 9 bins.
I kept this little pile just in case I needed some scraps for something. You never know.
Now to fill those bins again – Mmmmmmm, maybe not. But I am pretty sure that if I went through my stash cupboard I would be able to fill at least one of the large bins with pieces that really shouldn’t be in the yardage cupboard.
Anyway I didn’t get to the mug rug today because I was distracted by my scraps. I am feeling ecstatic that I have liberated my scraps and that they will be moving out to new homes later this month where they will be put to good use.
There was no point keeping them if I wasn’t going to use them although there were a couple of moments when I thought to myself “I should keep some of this”, but then thought really, you haven’t used them in 13 years why would you start now. So in the garbage bag they went.
In my scraps I did find these pieces of Bargello – what a great find and why they were in the scrap bin is beyond me. They have given me an idea for this week’s mug rug.
I’ll get to that mug rug later this week as I am off on another road trip Tuesday for a trunk show at the Royal City Quilter’s Guild in Guelph, a visit to Creative Sisters in Kitchener and to look at some furniture by Eddycrest as well as check out Country Patchworks.
It is going to be a full road trip which means I am going to need a good night’s sleep.
Happy Quilting!
I am glad to hear that you did not throw them away, our guild in Fredricksburgs, Texas does not throw anything away, at our monthly meeting we get bags of leftovers that we use to make scrappy quilts for child protective services and the rest goes to make dog beds for our local dog shelter.
Diane, very rarely do I throw away fabric – hence the pile of scraps. There is always a good use for them.
I am starting to collect “scraps” and buying material here and there so that when I have enough capital and materials I can start selling my own quilts. If you ever have some leftovers, I would be happy to take them off of your hands! ~Robyn Benoit, Rosenberg, TX, USA
Robyn, too bad we didn’t live closer – the postage would be a killer.
Oh my gosh I’m just starting to quilt, and I cried when you said you had that many scraps that needed a home! Jen my doors always open I live in Ontario Canada,Chatham I see all that fabric All I can think of is FUN FUN FUN! But I’m glad for you I can see you had lots and” LOTs” can also be A burden and in the way of you growing in quilting journey. Happy Quilting
Deb, the scraps were just sitting there not being used – at one time I had great intentions but those intentions never happened. Giving them away to a new home is just as good as using them up myself.
I’ll gladly take some scraps off your hands, I’ve just started to learn piecing in the hoop. I live in Mississippi.
Virginia, sorry they are all spoken for this time.
