a roll of invisigrip

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Cool Tool Thursday.

I don’t know about you but I have some rulers that slip and slide all over the place. When I first started quilting way back when the rulers did not come with no slip grip on the back which was a real problem for me. My first attempts at cutting fabric strips was quite dismal I must say – the ruler kept slipping and strips were not very straight which meant lots of fabric wastage. My husband ended up cutting my fabric for me so there wouldn’t be wastage. As I’m pretty short, I tended to push the ruler around when I tried to hold it down, where he, being taller, could push straight down on the ruler and it didn’t move as much. Now? I don’t let him near my cutting!

That Christmas in my stocking there was a roll of Invisigrip by Omnigrid. Invisigrip is a plastic film that goes on the back of the ruler. It comes in a roll which means pieces can be cut to fit any size of ruler. I cut the pieces about a ¼″  shorter and narrower than the ruler so that they just sit in approximately an ⅛″ from all edges when applied to the back of the ruler. If you try to cut it exactly the size of your ruler, you’ll likely end up with a bit sticking out here and there as it can be tricky to position it perfectly.

To put the Invisigrip on, start at one end of the ruler lining up the edge of the Invisigrip about an ⅛″ from the edge of the ruler. Slowly press the piece down along the back side of the ruler ensuring there are no wrinkles.

I have it on most of my older rulers and discovered yesterday when using my new square up ruler I need to apply some to it as well. Some people have told me that it doesn’t stay on but I have to say all of my rulers have had it for 10 years and have never had to be replaced. You do have to make sure that the back of the ruler is clean and take your time applying the film. Rolling it on, smoothing it as you go, will help prevent bubbles and wrinkles.

I have not found it to impede my cutting in any way nor to cause the ruler to sit up from the fabric as some of the non-slip gadgets do such as the sandpaper dots. The film is so thin it is just like a second skin on the back of the ruler. It is definitely my number one choice as a no slip solution for my rulers.

So if you have rulers that slip and slide give it a try.

Happy Quilting!
