Hey Everyone, welcome back to Technique Tuesday.
A few weeks back I finally took the Texture Magic out of it’s package and gave it a go. I didn’t do much with it but did enough to know that I wanted to play around with it some more.
This past weekend I was working on my African Plank Quilt and decided to use the Texture Magic with the African fabrics to create textured roofs, doors and windows for the shacks.
What fun I had experimenting with different motifs stitched onto the fabrics and then applying steam. The best part was seeing what I ended up with after shrinking the pieces.
The instructions say to mark your motif on the Texture Magic and sew with it on top but because I was doing free motion I didn’t mark anything and I sewed with the fabric on top. I made sure to put my Supreme Slider in place so that the Texture Magic wouldn’t catch on anything. Everything just flowed under the foot very nicely.
The instructions also say to iron from the fabric side so that the Texture Magic doesn’t get touched by the iron and melt. One of the ladies on LinkedIn puts her pieces under a baking rack with the Texture Magic facing up. I decided to give it a try and it worked like a charm. The steam applied over the piece above the rack shrunk the piece in no time. The shrinkage is approximately 30%.
I also wanted a bit more loft in my pieces so I added a layer of cotton batting between the fabric and Texture Magic.
Here are some of the different motifs and fabrics that I used and the end results.
Curved Diagonal Lines
Meandering Triangles
Horizontal Wiggly Lines
Checkerboard Motif
By using the Texture Magic I was able to create contrast in my fabrics and add another dimension to the appliquéd shacks. The sneak peak is at the top of the page.

Thanks for this great information and photos! I love the texture. I need to get some to keep on hand.
You are most welcome Valerie. Texture magic really is a lot of fun to play with.
Wow. Can’t wait to try this stuff. What it looks like you can do with it is faxcinating. Thanks for posting. Seeing what you can do with this stuff makes it even more interesting than the original post which was interesting, but seeing it in action is really over the top!! Thanks for posting.
Christina it is so much fun to play with and see what happens when it shrinks. Have fun!
Jen, I want to us squares in a quilt using texture magic. If I apply the texture magic to a piece of fabric then sew it, then shrink it how would I then attach that square in a quilt?
Charlene, you would need to leave enough fabric around the texture magic area for a seam allowance unless you want extra bulk and possibly and uneven seam. Jen
Ok thanks Jen that makes perfect sense!
Excellent Charlene, have fun.
