Gradated log cabin with a twist

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Story Time Monday.

Just a quick post this week to highlight the twisted log cabin quilt I made a few years ago. One of the Australian quilting instructors Lessa Siegele came to Roxby Downs to teach for a weekend and I had nothing to do that weekend so I joined in the fun.

Leesa had many different patterns to choose from and I of course picked one of the most fiddly and tedious – the twisted log cabin. This is a paper pieced design and let me tell you it is not sewn together quickly or at least I wasn’t very fast at it but I was persistent and I did get it done by the end of the two days.

I love how the pattern twists upon itself and changes with placement of colour. Originally my colour placement had been something different but one wrong twist of the first two sections to be sewn together and this is what I ended up with. It was definitely a happy unexpected twist.

The fabrics I used totally from my stash and they are all McKenna Ryan’s gradated fabrics. There are three different colour ways in the log cabin – green, purples and yellow to peachy-pink. In order to get the right gradation from light to dark in a couple of the colours I had to use the wrong side of the fabric – to look at it you would never know. Not the first time and probably not the last.

A simple pieced border on the navy background works perfectly to set off the log cabin. Add some stippling and binding and it was ready to hang on the wall – it was less than week from start to completion. Probably the fastest project from a class I have ever finished.

Happy Quilting!
