Still working on the green theme I delved into the scrap bin I keep under my sewing table to pull out all the green fabrics.

There were more than I thought there would be. My goal is build my own piece of fabric to use in the mug rug design.

Creating Unique Fabric
After giving them a press I cut the chosen ones up into small pieces with my rotary cutter. Free cutting with no ruler made for some interesting shapes.

I pulled out a piece of fusible non-woven interfacing to place the pieces on.

Once the piece of interfacing was fully covered I fused everything in place.

Then I free motion stitched back and forth and all around the edges of the pieces to prevent lifting and fraying.

Here’s a close up of the stitching. This piece of fabric reminds me of a Leprechaun and what his vest or suit would be made out of.

Building the Mug Rug
Choosing a lighter green fabric to go with the newly engineered fabric I cut each into 2 ½″ x 3 ½″ pieces – 4 from the light and 5 from the other.
Sewing the pieces together has created a nine patch design that is rectangular rather than the usual square design. The piece 9 ¼″ x 6 ½″.

After sandwiching the layers I did stitch in the ditch along all the seams. This is not my favourite form of quilting but it has worked well for this design. Since the new fabric is very busy and already has stitching all over it I didn’t think it needed anymore. Sometimes less is more.

Now that it is bound it is ready for St Paddy’s day tomorrow – hmmmm – a mug of coffee or a mug of green beer.
