Road to Oklahoma Block

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Stash Blasting Wednesday.

This week I decided to try one of the road blocks – there are a few of them out there. This one is called the Road to Oklahoma. Can’t say I have ever been to Oklahoma and I certainly have never made this block before today.

Once again a very simple block that creates a very unique design or two when put together.

Fabrics and Cutting

Pick fabrics – 3 different ones in total. A dark, medium and light value if using from the same colour family as I did.  This makes it a monochromatic colour scheme.

Press all fabrics.

Cut as follows for one 6 inch block:

Note:  ¼″ seam allowance included in all cutting instructions

  • Dark pink:  1 – 2” x 9” strip
  • Medium pink:  2 – 2 ¾″ squares; 2 – 2″ squares
  • Light pink:  1 – 2” x 9” strip; 2 – 2″ squares; 2 – 2 ¾″ squares

All fabrics cut into pieces.

Making the Block

Note:  All seams are a ¼″ unless stated otherwise.

Sew the dark pink and light pink strips together down one long side. Press seam towards dark fabric.

Square off one end of the above strip unit and sub cut into 4 – 2” x 3 ½″ rectangles.

Make four half square triangles with the 2 ¾″ squares of light and medium pink fabrics. For instructions on how to make half square triangles see my earlier post on how to make half square triangles. If you are making more than one block then check out the grid method of how to make half square triangles.

And of course I used my awesome squaring up ruler to square up the half square triangles. Square up the HST’s to 2 inches.

Layout the pieces as shown below. Laying them out will help keep them in order and in the proper direction.

I couldn’t resist and made 3 more of the blocks so I could see what kind of designs this block made. It made 3 different ones but the first two are the same just reverse of each other and when put together will form a star and square design all over the quilt.

The first two I like the best and think it would make a wonderful quilt for a little girl.

Be sure to tune in next week to see which road block I am going to follow next.

Happy Quilting!
