felting design

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Stash Blasting Wednesday.

I had another felting lesson. The focus of the lesson was positive and negative as well as layering.

Check out my first felting lesson.

To achieve this I ironed strips of freezer paper to the jean material where I didn’t want any felting to occur.

For the first piece the freezer paper strips were put on at angles to create triangles within the design. The roving was felted on in very light layers ranging from light yellow to red.

Then more roving was added adding the light on top of the dark and continuing down the piece until I ended with dark on light.

A couple more layers of roving was added with each starting from a different corner of the piece and running either horizontal, vertical or diagonally on the piece. Once the last layer of roving was on the paper was removed and this is the end result. Positive vs negative – felting vs plain jean material.

Several layers of roving create a positive-negative design with the jean material

The second piece I started out with the strips slightly curved and fairly close together in a horizontal pattern. Green roving was the first layer to be added.

Next some light pink and dark pink.

Pink added as the second layer

Eventually it ended up being all pink and the green was no longer seen.

Covered in pink

Pretty much all pink

Paper removed and this is what it looks like. The curved lines of the freezer paper were not as curvy in the end product.

The back is just as interesting as the front of the piece.

So much fun and slowly I will use up that jean stash. Using only 2 pieces a week though means it is going to take a bit of time.

Happy Quilting!
