Mini Shuffled Bricks Mug Rug

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Mug Rug Monday.

This mug rug is actually last week’s mug rug. The week did not go as planned but never fear the mug rug is here. In fact this is the first I have touched my sewing machine in more than a week.

This little piece is based on my quilt pattern Shuffled Bricks only with a much smaller block.

I’ve used a light background and bold feature fabrics from the left over scraps of a previous Shuffled Bricks quilt to create this mug rug. I’m learning to use my scraps – only because they are coordinated.

A variety of scraps in orange, pink and cream

My scraps

To begin I changed the size of the block to a 4 inch finished block in EQ7 so I would know how big to cut the pieces.

Then I sewed the background pieces to the feature fabrics.

Sewing the above pieces together I created the blocks.

And then the rows.

Finally the rows sewn together to create the mug rug which is 8 ¼″ x 12″.

A quick sandwich and I was ready to quilt. Well, once I added some pins to baste the three layers together and keep them in place.

I really wanted to do free motion stippling and so I did because I haven’t done any for a long time. I only wish I had used a cream coloured thread as the one I chose is too dark and takes away from the graphic layout of the blocks.

When I quilt the larger version of this I will be using a light coloured thread and probably a more geometric quilting motif to accentuate the geometric design of the quilt.

Binding added and all ready for a cup of tea and yummy butter tart.
