Leaves Galore Rulers

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Cool Tool Thursday.

Seeing how I have been working and creating with the Leaves Galore rulers by Sue Pelland Designs this week I figured they would be a great tool to feature this week for Cool Tool Thursday.

The rulers come in three sizes – Petite, Norme (medium) and Grande (large). With each ruler two different sizes of leaves or petals can be cut. There is also the option to trim this down if a smaller leaf or petal is needed.

The petite ruler cuts 2 ½″ and 5″ leaves. The norme ruler cuts 3″ and 6″ leaves while the large one cuts 4″ and 8″ leaves.

The oval shape is the basic shape that the ruler cuts but variations of it can be done as well with a bit of moving of the ruler and lining up different lines.

Along with the oval shaped leaves these rulers also cut S and Z shaped leaves and petals. You can make them wide or thin which ever tickles your fancy. I used these 2 shapes for the leaves and petals on the Jacaranda Tree quilt.

And wait there is more – vines can also be cut with these very versatile rulers.

It does take a little bit to get the hang of cutting along those curves but using the 28mm rotary cutter makes it a lot easier to manoeuvre around them. I did try using my 45mm rotary cutter and it was too large. Slowing down also helps to keep everything in line with no oopses cuts along the way.

Many layers can be cut at once which speeds up the cutting process especially if many leaves are needed. As well the fusible is put on the back of the fabric prior to cutting so once the pieces are cut they are ready to fuse to the background fabric.

I have to say that I am loving what I can do with these rulers. Stay tuned for a Technique Tuesday post to come soon on how to use these very versatile and cool rulers.

And another bonus is that there is very little fabric wastage with this ruler.

Remember I will be at Creativfest in Toronto tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday April 26 & 27 to demo them at the Country Concessions booth.
