felted roving on denim

Hey Everyone, welcome back to Stash Blasting Wednesday.

Yesterday I had my first felting lesson with the embellishing/felting machine. I was fortunate enough to be given one by my mother-in-law some time ago and I haven’t used it so I figured high time I did. A good friend of mine who has done a lot of felting is teaching me and so far so good.

A few years ago when living in Australia I did try needle punch felting and made a scarf – this was done by hand and a lot more time consuming than with the machine.

The machine is very basic and looks like a sewing machine but has a set of needles for punching through the fibres. These are housed in a cage so I don’t felt my fingers. That would not be good to get 5 large bore needles through a finger – probably a trip to the emergency department would be required.

The other great thing is that I am hoping to use up a lot of the left over jean material I have from making jean rag quilts way back when. Perfect for Stash blasting Wednesday. The denim is a great base for the felting because it is nice and sturdy.

As well I get to use all of my cool yard, ribbons and roving that I have acquired over time.

I had lots of fun playing with the machine and made 3 different pieces.

Piece #1 is mostly yarn, wool and some roving.

Piece #2 is roving and felt.

So now it looks like I have a new addiction to add to my life – well at least once a week. Maybe I will make enough pieces to put together for a wall hanging.

Happy Quilting!
